People who’ve been nearly destroyed in a “serious romance” with someone who only takes their own emotions seriously simply settle for transactional romance, it’s not really a choice, it’s the one thing they can manage. And yes, being alone most likely is worse than being in a moderately dysfunctional transactional relationship.
Non-abusive “serious romantics” are hard to come by, and even they understand that a certain level of transactional pragmatism is necessary for a functioning relationship. I would even go so far as to claim that “serious romance” is necessarily egotistical and abusive, but that’s probably just me being butthurt.
